Seated Riser Bundles

Seated Riser Bundles: Complete Guide

What Are Seated Riser Bundles?

Seated riser bundles are complete performance platform systems designed specifically for choral groups, bands and orchestras. Unlike standing risers or individual platforms, these bundles include everything needed for a tiered seating arrangement: riser platforms, guardrails, structural supports, and all necessary hardware. Each bundle is pre-configured to create 3-level or 4-level tiers, allowing performers to sit at different heights for optimal visibility and sound projection. These all-in-one packages eliminate the guesswork of matching compatible components and ensure proper weight capacity and safety compliance.

Who Uses Seated Choir and Band Risers?

• Schools & Universities: Music departments use seated risers for choir concerts, band performances, orchestra recitals, and graduation ceremonies. The tiered design helps conductors see all performers and ensures audience members can view the entire ensemble.
• Churches & Houses of Worship: Choirs rely on seated risers to create professional presentations during services, holiday concerts and special performances. The elevated tiers improve sound projection throughout the sanctuary.
• Performing Arts Centers: Theaters and concert halls use modular seated risers to quickly configure spaces for different group sizes, from small chamber ensembles to large symphony orchestras. They can also be used as audience risers.
• Community Groups: Civic choruses, community bands and amateur theater groups benefit from portable seated risers that can be set up, taken down, and stored between performances.

3-Level vs 4-Level Risers: Which Do You Need?

• 3-Level Seated Risers are ideal for groups of 40-70 performers. They typically rise to 24 inches at the highest tier and work well in spaces with 9-10 foot ceilings. Three tiers provide sufficient depth for most school choirs, small church groups and chamber ensembles. These configurations take up less floor space and are easier to store.
• 4-Level Seated Risers accommodate larger groups of 70-100+ performers. With heights reaching 32 inches, they require higher ceilings (11+ feet) and more floor space. Four tiers are recommended for large school choirs, symphonic bands, full orchestras and mega-church worship teams. The additional tier significantly improves sight lines for audiences in larger venues.

Riser Surface Options Explained

• Carpeted Risers: The most popular choice for choral and band risers. Carpet provides sound dampening to reduce foot noise, prevents chairs from sliding, offers comfortable footing, and creates a professional appearance. Available in grey, black, blue or red. Best for permanent or semi-permanent installations in choir rooms, band halls and auditoriums.
• Hardboard Risers: Feature smooth, durable hardboard decking that is neutral in color and slightly more affordable than carpet options. Chairs may require rubber feet or pads to prevent sliding.
• Vinyl/Poly Risers: Utilize high-density polypropylene surfaces that are lightweight, water-resistant and extremely durable. Polydeck is perfect for outdoor venues, touring groups and facilities that set up/tear down risers frequently. The textured surface provides grip without carpet's maintenance requirements and is easy to clean with a damp cloth. Most weather-resistant option available.

Standard Riser Dimensions

Most seated riser bundles use one of two standard tier depths:

• 36-inch Deep Tiers: Designed for traditional choral risers where performers sit in folding chairs. The 36" depth provides adequate space for a row of chairs plus room for performers to stand during certain pieces. Works with standard 18" deep folding chairs. Recommended minimum aisle width between rows: 24 inches.
• 48-inch Deep Tiers: Created for band and orchestra risers where performers need extra space for instruments, music stands and equipment. The 48" depth accommodates chairs and stands, and allows percussionists or large instruments to fit comfortably. Essential for symphonic bands, orchestras and jazz ensembles.

How Many Performers Will a Riser Bundle Seat?

Capacity depends on tier depth, number of levels, and overall width. General guidelines per 8-foot-wide straight section:

• 3-Level, 36" Tiers: 40-60 performers (typical choir)
• 3-Level, 48" Tiers: 50-70 performers (typical band)
• 4-Level, 36" Tiers: 60-80 performers (large choir)
• 4-Level, 48" Tiers: 80-100+ performers (large band/orchestra)

Actual capacity varies based on chair spacing. Allow 24 inches of width per performer for comfortable seating. For example, a 16-foot-wide tier can seat approximately 8 performers per row.

Are Guardrails Required?

Safety regulations typically require guardrails on any riser tier elevated more than 30 inches from the floor; however, your local ordinances may vary. Most configurations will need guardrails on the back and side edges unless set up against a wall. Guardrails prevent falls and meet OSHA and IBC building codes for public assembly spaces. Schools should check with their facilities department, as educational institutions often have stricter safety requirements than commercial venues.

Can Seated Risers Be Reconfigured?

Yes! Most seated riser bundles use modular platforms that can be rearranged into different configurations. You might set up 3 levels for a small concert, then expand to 4 levels for your spring musical. Platforms can also be used individually as standing platforms, speaker stages, or display risers for other events. This versatility makes seated riser bundles a smart investment for multi-purpose facilities.

What's the Difference Between Seated and Standing Risers?

Seated risers (also called band risers) are designed for performers who sit during performances. They feature deeper tiers (36-48 inches) to accommodate chairs and music stands. Standing risers (also called standing choral risers) have shallower tiers (typically 18 inches deep) and are intended for performers who stand throughout the performance.

How Much Space Do I Need?

Calculate required floor space by considering both the riser footprint and necessary clearances:

• Riser Footprint: A straight 3-level riser with 36" deep tiers requires approximately 9 feet of depth (3 tiers × 3 feet). Width varies by configuration (typically 8-32 feet wide). Curved riser configurations will require more depth, and measurements are provided for each riser bundle.
• Front Clearance: Allow 4-6 feet in front for conductor space and performers entering/exiting. Allow additional  space in front if utilizing the floor space in front for an additional row of performers.
• Side Clearance: Provide 3-4 feet on each side for safe access to stairs and emergency egress.
• Ceiling Height: Ensure adequate headroom. A 4-level riser may reach 32 inches high, so you will need at least 10-11 feet of ceiling clearance for performers to stand comfortably on the top tier.

Assembly and Installation

Most seated riser bundles ship flat on pallets by freight vcarrier. Assembly typically requires 2-3 people and basic hand tools (wrenches, screwdrivers). Plan for 2-4 hours for initial setup of a complete 3-level system. Once assembled, risers remain together unless you need to reconfigure or store them. For schools and houses of worship doing annual setups, platforms and guardrails can be stored flat or on edge to minimize storage space. Storage and transport dollies are available for easy setup and storage.

Warranty and Support

Seated riser bundles from National Public Seating and other major brands include manufacturer warranties covering defects in materials and workmanship. Standard warranties vary by manufacturer and range from 2-10 years. We stock replacement parts including individual platforms, guardrail sections and connector hardware. Our support team can troubleshoot assembly questions, recommend configurations, and provide dimensional specifications for your specific space.
