Most portable stages are built with 4'x4' or 4'x8' modular platforms, so planning in 4-foot increments is usually the simplest and most economical option. For more precise sizing, some brands offer narrower decks, including 1' and 2' widths from Bil-Jax and 3' widths from IntelliStage, QuickLock, NPS and Midwest Folding. Smaller deck sizes typically cost more per square foot.
Yes. Portable stages are available with fixed-height, dual-height and adjustable-height legs. Dual-height folding legs provide two preset heights, such as 16"/24" or 24"/32", while telescoping legs allow more precise adjustments and can accommodate uneven surfaces.
The best surface depends on how and where you'll use your stage. Carpet is economical and hides wear well, while textured vinyl is water-resistant and provides better traction for dance and fitness applications. Hardboard is typically the most budget-friendly option. For outdoor use, water-resistant poly or industrial finishes work well for temporary setups but should be protected from wet weather. For frequent or long-term outdoor use, weatherproof aluminum is the most durable choice.
It depends primarily on the size and weight of the platforms. Large 4'x8' decks can weigh up to 200 lbs and generally require multiple people to handle safely. Smaller 4'x4' and 3'x3' platforms are much easier to manage, with IntelliStage platforms weighing approximately 55 lbs each. Mobile folding stages have built-in wheels that make setup and storage easier.
Most standard 4'x4' and 4'x8' platforms are too large for a car or small SUV. For frequent transport, consider 3'x3' platforms or folding platforms, which are designed to fit into smaller vehicles more easily.
Portable stage prices vary based on size, height, platform construction, surface finish and accessories.
